Customer Threat Spotlight;
The convergence of three pivotal developments in late April 2025 marks a critical inflection point for U.S. cybersecurity—with far-reaching implications for large corporations, federal and state governments, and healthcare systems nationwide. For CISOs and CEOs, this is not merely about reacting to discrete threats; it’s about seeing the full board and connecting every strategic move.
Escalating Cyber Threats from Adversarial Nations A surge in sophisticated cyberattacks from nations such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea is targeting key U.S. infrastructure sectors including energy, healthcare, and finance. These state-sponsored operations are designed to disrupt essential services and steal sensitive data, thereby jeopardizing national security and economic stability. In particular, we should help our customers understand background on Volt Typhoon, as well full-contact cyber scrimmages dating back 9-12 months ago in rural Texas (https://apnews.com/article/cybersecurity-trump-china-russia-iran-north-korea-9eceaf30ddc984ed482f067db5dee405)
Internal Disruption of U.S. Cybersecurity Leadership Internal actions have further eroded the resilience of U.S. cyber defenses. Recent high-profile dismissals and politicized investigations within the federal cybersecurity leadership have led to notable gaps, undermining trust both domestically and among international allies. Such leadership vacuums have the potential to exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, making the nation even more susceptible to external attacks. Intensifying AI Competition with China The strategic competition in artificial intelligence is adding an urgent layer of complexity. A recent CNAS report highlights that while the United States maintains a lead in military applications of AI, China is robustly leveraging AI as a tool for state power and techno-authoritarian influence . This report underscores that the technological race is not a zero-sum game but a high-stakes challenge where each nation’s advancements directly influence global security dynamics. https://www.cnas.org/press/press-release/new-cnas-report-on-the-world-altering-stakes-of-u-s-china-ai-competition
Why does this matter to you, the Cyber Sales Team/Customer Advocates? Individually, these developments present formidable challenges. However, their convergence creates a precarious landscape where external adversaries exploit internal disarray, and the relentless AI race further compounds the risk. For CISOs and CEOs, missing the larger picture by focusing solely on isolated moves is a perilous gamble. In this interconnected threat environment, organizations must reassess and fortify cybersecurity strategies by fostering robust public-private partnerships, investing in emerging technologies, and depoliticizing leadership to mitigate these compounded risks .
Is the funding freeze thawing?
While this is typically a busy week for announcements (ie RSA) it should be noted funding for cyber/cyber-adjacent start ups appear to be more frequent and, notably, larger in size. Here are a just a few that have reports of funding:
Reco Security, SAAS/AI Security - reports of $25M in new funding (reco.ai)
Cynomi, the AI powered V-CISO Platform - SecurityWeek is reporting they received a Series B round of $37M (https://cynomi.com/)
Square-X, The Browser MDR Platform - The company is reporting they received $20 in new funding led by SYN Ventures https://sqrx.com/
The Daily Raptor - Where did you come from?
We are a small (but mighty) cyber security media firm focused exclusively on serving the cyber security sales profession. The company’s Founding Principal, Stephen Baker/your truly has spent 30 (yes, THIRTY) years in the cyber security industry. We will have significant content contributions from our leaders and peers in this industry, so look for that! A crucial goal of DR is to listen, learn and help each other. - The vast majority of us (in the vast majority of times) are in a position to help each other and lift each other up. So, let’s do just that.
Later in the week, we will be writing and discussing sales strategy, of course, but also operating as a team within our team. When and how do we enlist others to our cause to support and advocate for our customer? How to win, of course a staple topic… and just as importantly, how to win gracefully and assign (or over assign!) credit to peers/others.

Travel safe this week & I look forward to our future written discussions, webinars & events. We will be sharing at least one and potentially more partnerships in the near future, so hopefully we’ll cover these topics this week or early next.
